Church of La Merced

The church opens up behind a spectacular west front designed on three levels. It was part of the friary belonging to the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy set up here in 1684 beside the palace of the Marquis of Cañete and the old Arab castle. It has only one nave under a barrel vault with high windows that give a sensation of space and height. In its interior there is a beautiful rococo- style balcony by Martín de Aldehuela. When the cathedral bell tower collapsed in 1902 services were transferred to this church. The church has been kept closed for the last 20 years until the recent restoration by the Consortium of the City of Cuenca.
