Cuenca is one of the oldest cities in Castile.  It is located almost in the centre of Spain where the Sistema Iberica mountain range ends and a short distance from the Mountains of Toledo . Both these facts define the strictly highland nature of the city. Labelled as one of the most beautiful and surprising Cityscapes in the world (it was named a World Heritage Site in 1996) Cuenca has two clearly defined urban areas: the historical centre which crowds around the rocky spur which descends from the hill of San Cristóbal ringed by the two rivers Júcar and Huécar, and the low-lying modern part of the city. Between the two is an intermediate zone known as Carretería built at the beginning of the XX century.
