The Chapterhouse of Cuenca Cathedral

It was built at the beginning of the 16th century. Its extraordinary façade was added in the time of the bishop Diego Ramírez de Villaescusa (1518-37), as can be seen from the coat of arms. The small area that separates the Chapterhouse from the cathedral was left in the open-air until the 18th century. The façade, considered to be in the style of Antonio Flórez, is very richly decorated, and in the spaces between the columns there are four niches with representations of the cardinal virtues, and above these, the three theological virtues. In the upper tympanum there is a sculpture of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Transfiguration.

The Chapterhouse has a Renaissance coffered ceiling from the 16th century that was painted later in the 18th century.

The paintings found in the walls represent the Twelve Apostles, painted by Cristóbal García Salmerón in 1649 and finished with the image of Christ and St Matthias, by Pedro Páez in 1779. Other paintings that can be found in the Chapterhouse are the Visitation of the Our Lady and St Isabel, oil on wood, a work by Martín Gómez “The Elder”, from the 16th century; the Immaculate Conception, oil on canvas, painted by Pedro Atanasio Bocanegra at the end of the 17th century; the Resurrection of Christ, oil on canvas, by Francesco Solimena between the 17th and 18th centuries; and Saint Francis of Assisi, polychromed wood is attributed to Luis Salvador Carmona from the 18th century
